Yes wonderful, kill scientific curiosity among your young. Way to go American lunkheads.

Garage chemistry used to be a rite of passage for geeky kids. But in their search for terrorist cells and meth labs, authorities are making a federal case out of DIY science.

Since some people are intent on going to amusement parks and minefeilds. ;) [Aug. 9th, 2005|04:57 pm]
When injuries occur;

Early Signs of Shock

Look at and feel the injured person's skin: Are they pale and clammy, first in the extremities and then in the trunk? If so, assume shock.

Take the injured person's pulse: Is it rapid, thready or irregular? If so, assume shock.

Take the injured person's respiratory rate: Is it shallow or rapid? If either, assume shock.

Observe the injured person's temper: Is he or she restless, agitated or irritable? If so, assume shock.

Ask the injured person how he or she feels. Any complaints of thirst or nausea? If so, assume shock.

Assess for Severe Shock

Observe the injured person's temper: Is he or she confused or disoriented? If so, assume severe shock.

Evaluate the injured person's level of consciousness: Is he or she unconscious or unresponsive? If so, assume severe shock.

Take the person's pulse: Is it irregular or increasing progressively? If so, assume severe shock.

This is all very basic.

If shock is suspected seek immediate medical assistance.

Have fun. ;p

Heat rash. [Jul. 26th, 2005|01:19 am]
Aloe vera does everything. You can use the juice directly from the plant or you can buy aloe vera gel in bottles, tubes and capsules (pierce the capsules and squeeze out the contents) If possible, shower and rinse off any creams, chemicals or salt deposits before applying.

Lavender essential oil is also soothing and healing and has antibiotic properties. Mosquitoes don't like it which is also good.

Add five or six drops of lavender oil into a cool bath and immerse yourself for ten minutes or else you can spray the affected parts of the body with an atomiser containing cold water and a few drops of lavender oil.

Bach Flower Remedies Rescue Remedy and Impatiens are said to help relieve itching.

Take four drops of Rescue Remedy in a little water or right from the applicator if you're butch about it.

If you use Impatiens, add two drops to a small bottle of mineral water (about 30ml) and take four drops at least four times a day.

If you're prone to heat rash, Vitamin C has a natural antihistamine effect and will help prevent, or minimise inflammation and itching.
The B vitamins and vitamin E will also help to prevent or reduce inflammation.

Actions Bring Consequences. [Jul. 16th, 2005|01:15 pm]
The Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance of Southern Nevada endorses being responsible for one's actions.

The ABC's are mentioned often at their meetings.

Actions Bring Consequences.

This is the case with many such organizations nationwide and I'm reasonably certain the same standards apply globally as well.

I agree that if we don't hold people responsible for their actions, with or without a diagnosed disorder we are doing them a disservice.

We are allowing them to continue doing things that are harmful to themselves and others, thus making ourselves into the worst kinds of enablers.

Finally, when we permit people with bipolar disorder to behave any way they choose with no consequences, excusing them because of their disorder, we do disservice to the efforts of all of those with bipolar disorder who are managing their illness responsibly, holding down jobs and interacting constructively with the world they live in.

It's far from impossible. Harmful episodes should not be taken for granted.

Foot fungus from the pool and/or locker room? [Jul. 12th, 2005|01:29 pm]
Apple cider vinegar in a spray bottle is good.

So is a lotion or spray with more than trace amounts of
tea tree oil.

I'd use that before putting socks/sandals on personally.

Bach rescue remedy. [Jul. 2nd, 2005|12:59 pm]

I recommend this product for panic attacks and similar.

It's very similar to a tincture I use for my own patients.

I've noticed a lot of stress and panic attacks on my friends list.

For sunburn. [Jun. 27th, 2005|05:35 pm]
I prefer to keep aloe juice in the fridge and use that.

Calendula oil is a popular alternative but I prefer not
to use oils for skin complaints if I can help it.

Enjoy your holidays. [Jul. 3rd, 2004|04:05 am]
Alcohol irritates the stomach lining, so do not take aspirin!

Hangovers are best prevented or remedied with sufficient water intake and a light meal. Don’t mix your drinks. Smoking intensifies the problem because of the additional toxins and further dehydration. I don’t even want to discuss chewing tobacco.

Vitamin C helps reduce the effects of alcohol toxicity on the body. Depleted magnesium causes shaking, nervousness and tension associated with a hangover, and should be supplemented.
The B vitamins also help to calm and strengthen the nervous system, reduce the toxic effects of alcohol and stop cravings for more.

Ginger is an anti-nauseant and will soothe the stomach. Stir a glass of natural ginger ale to reduce the carbonation and drink slowly.
Place a drop of Japanese mint oil on the tongue. Breathe in deeply through the mouth and out the nose. Repeat various times.
Gentian, peppermint or centaury leaf tea will soothe and normalize an upset stomach.
A combination of peppermint and fennel emulsion diluted in 1/2 cup of water is great for soothing a painful stomach. With ulcers, take the fennel only.
Mix equal amounts of agrimony, wormwood and centaury to relieve migraines. Pour boiling water over 2 tbsp. of this mix, steep five minutes, strain and drink unsweetened in small quantities.

Also drink lots of water to oxygenate the blood, then go back to sleep. Go for a brisk walk in the fresh air. Take a shower, alternating between about five minutes of hot water and a few seconds of cold.

Enjoy your holiday.
